Indian Men's Basketball: Dream Team

India has sent several different Men's teams to international competitions over the past year. These have included the South Asian Games at Dhaka in January, the Asian Games at Guanzhou in November, and the Super Kung Sheung Cup at Hong Kong in December. Additionally, a talented bunch of Indian youngsters represented the country at the Junior FIBA Asia Championships at Yemen in September. Of course, many fans got a chance to watch their favourite players in action for their states/clubs at the National Championship that was held at New Delhi in December/January.

Now, with all these different squads, which have included several new omissions, players left out due to injury/behaviour reasons, or other changes, it is hard to decide what would be India's strongest Men's side.

Fear not: what I have decided to compile here is my personal favourite pick of Indian players. If I was India's coach/selector, this is the squad of 12 I would pick to represent the country in International competitions. I have tried to pick a good blend of players with different sizes and abilities that I feel will complement each other. Also, this team should be a good blend of youth and experience - seniors to help lead the squad, players in their prime, and youngsters to provide the right kind of energy and hunger.

My Indian Dream Team

Starting Five
PG: TJ Sahi
SG: Vishesh Bhriguvanshi (Captain)
SF: Trideep Rai
PF: Jagdeep Singh
C: Yadivinder Singh
Bench
Hareesh Koroth
Dinesh CV
Dishant Shah
Arjun Singh
Amjyot Singh
Sambaji Kadam
Jai Ram Jat

As you may notice, I've picked players like Sahi and Kadam, who are now in exile from the national system, but I feel who are strong enough to still make a difference at the biggest stage.

Here are some players who I would like to give honourable mention to: S. Robinson, Kiran Pal Singh, Prakash Mishra, Eudrick Pereira, Bobby Singh, Sunil Rathee, Ajay Pratap Singh.

Over to you now: if you could pick your Indian Men's Dream Team, what would it be?

  1. This could be the dream team in this decade. But this team had managed to win only 1 match in the recent Asian games (that too against Afghanistan). The losing margins against the other asian gaints are also huge.

According to me the all time best team in India is as below:

    1. R. Rajan Joseph
    2. Ram Kumar
    3. Ajmer Singh
    4. C V Sunny
    5. Sahid Qureshi
    6. Mohd. Rizwan
    7. Harikrishna Prasad
    8. Jai Shankar Menon
    9. Rajesh Srivastava
    10. Sunil Panda
    11. Jasminder Singh
    12. Anthony

The above team has done very good for India in the Asian level tournamnets during at that point of time (late 80s). The team used to play excellent game and used to give tough competition to the asian gaints (China, Japan, Saudi, etc) and not easily give up games.

Unfortunately nobody knows about this team as the media also didn't bother much and we don't have access to Internet and information.

The BFI should honor these great players and introduce them to the Hall of fame in their official site.

Even today most of the above people are contributing to the game and helping the younger generation.

    1. Prasad I agree with this original Dream Team. I see that these guys THEN had beaten world series teams and shocked foreign audoences on foreign shores - like Jordan, S Arabia. Our media, sadly never projected the Indian hoops heores those days.

  5. I feel so sorry for the Indian team the way they were playing...the ball handler cant even control the ball.
I feel bad for those who deserve but not a part of Indian team.
Take an example of Yadwinder, he cant even take a proper turn shot on pivot, he just got height and jump,..but I think one need a brain as well.

  6. The Tata Steel team between 1980 - 1995 was probably the best in the country . It had great players like Sunil Tandon , Panda , Rajesh Srivastava , Syed Quershi , Satish Kumar , Unvin Antony , Ratna Rao , Sreepati rao , V Krishnan , Seshadiri , Rahul Chaudhry, VIjaya raghavan , Kamalakar rao , Harbhajan singh , Irani , SC Dutt , RC Dutt , Ranga , and so on. It was virtually the Indian team itself. But sadly after the ouster of Mr Russi Modi from the helm of affairs of Tisco , basketball lost the management patronage. Very sad >

    1. I cannot agree more with you. I have witnessed games of the Tata Steel team you are talking about. Also Mr. P.N. Shankaran was quite a positive force of development of this team!

  7. Very true. The player we used to really enjoy watching were the south indian players like Unvin , Satish , Rajan ,etc. They were very elegant in their game and not at all like the players of the North who used more of brute force rather than techniques.

  8. Hi , i think Ram kumar , Khushi Ram , Ajmer Singh are the best basketball players from India , no player can ever be like Ajmer Singh and Khushi ram's post plays and no one can ever match Ram kumar's shooting techniques

  9. Ajmer Singh is Amitabh Bachhan of INDIAN Basket ball ...India can never produce another Ajmer Singh ..The grace with which he scores from near the board, fade away and against the tallest. The faster the player ...easier for Ajmer to score ...defense was better in those days ..If yadwinder singh was playing against central railway ..likes of Haneef patel, bijapur ,abdul hammed ..he would not even score two points in the game ..these players must be laughing at the current teams am sure...

  10. I strongly believe that Robinson is the best ever player Indian has produced. I have
seen Ajmer Singh play. He was an accurate shooter but without Hanuman Singh
to feed him, he was hndicapped . He was a good player no doubt but he did not have the mobility of Robinson. Robinson has played in the pro league in Iran and as as every one knows, Iran is the only team in Asia that can beat China and their Leagues are very tough. Robinson was also invited by clubs in New Zealand to play there.
NZ and Australia have very strong teams and being invited by a NZ club is a recognition
of Robinson's talent. It was during Robinson's tenure that TN won 5 national
championships in a row. He scored more than 50 points against Korea, a strong team.
So my choice of MVP India has produced is S Robinson, followed by Hanuman Singh,
Ajmer Singh and Kushi Ram (I hvnt seen Kushi Ram play but hv heard of his exploits)
